Overview

Located along the Ka’iwi State Scenic Shoreline, the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail offers hikers a gentle climb above O’ahu’s stunning southeastern coast.  Follow the paved path one mile to the top lookout point and enjoy the near 360 degree view, only made more magnificent if you visit at sunrise.  On clear days, you can even see as far as Molokai and Lana’i.

The lighthouse, which is unfortunately off limits, can be seen just below the lookout point. As you make your way back down the trail, keep your eye out for the Humpback Whale sign. Beginning in November and lasting until May, Makapu’u provides one of the best vantage points for spotting whales during the season.

If you are up for a little bit more of a challenge, follow the trail starting from the whale sign down to the tide pools. The path is rather steep and slippery at times, but if you are willing to make the climb down, you will be rewarded with deep ocean pools, perfect for jumping in and cooling off.

*Watch your step on the rocks and please be sure to avoid going near the blowholes, as they may result in injury or death.*

Getting There

By car: Follow the map below to Makapu’u Lighthouse Road and park in the lot at the base of the trailhead. On foot, follow the paved road up to the top. On the way back down, you will see a faint trail starting at the Humpback whale sign that will take you down to the tidepools.

By bus: From Waikiki, Take Route 22 – The Beach Bus to Sea Life Park. Walk back along round for approximately 1 mile. Makapu’u Lighthouse Road will be on your left.

One of my favorite hikes to go on! Easy to walk as it is paved. I love to go for the sunrise. There is something about hiking there and sitting and watching a beautiful sunrise with the crisp air and ocean sounding in the background. Just beautiful.

I’ve heard tidepools is definitely more dangerous.

Although the tide pools experience is beautiful, it is also a very challenging hike down and back up. The water/waves crashing in the tide pools themselves can be scary, especially for children. I don’t recommend this for kids.
