Overview

While best known for its “stairmaster” hike up an old tramway, Koko Crater has much more to offer than just a good workout and amazing views.  Located on the southeastern slope of this cinder cone is a natural rock arch.  The trail to this site is fairly short, though there are sections that are incredibly steep, adding a little difficulty to the mix. Park at Halona Blowhole and walk to mile marker 15 along the highway. Climb over the rail here and descend a short ways into the ravine. Follow the rock ledge on the left until you find a safe way to the top of this ridge. From here you will see a trail following the ridgeline, offering beautiful views of the coast.  As you continue down the path, look up to the right to spot the rock arch. The trail will soon curve to the right as you approach the arch. Here there are two paths to take. The upper path brings you to the topside of the arch – it is a STEEP climb, but worth it. The lower trail brings you underneath the arch, providing a very cool perspective. It should be noted however that the lower path consists of fracturing rock and is a steep and slippery climb, so please proceed with caution. From the arch you can choose to head back the way you came, or can continue up the slope to join onto the Koko Crater Rim Trail.

Getting There

By car: Follow the map below and park at the Halona Blowhole overlook. From the parking lot, turn left and walk along highway to the opposite side of Cockroach Cove. Across the street, look for mile marker 15 – climb over the rail here. Walk down along the rocky ledge on your left a couple hundred feet and then find your way up the ridge. At the top of the ridge you will see a trail to follow.

By bus: From Waikiki, take Route 22 The Beach Bus to Sandy Beach. Walk back along the highway and follow the directions above.
