Diamond Head Trail

Overview

A world-famous landmark of the Hawaiian islands, Diamond Head Crater is O’ahu’s most popular hike among visitors. The busy trail is sometimes overwhelming, but the 360 degree views from the top of the crater’s walls make the trip worthwhile.

The 1.6 mile round-trip hike can be rather tiring, with the second half of the trail resulting in numerous sets of stairs.  The majority of the hike is in direct sunlight, so be sure to bring plenty of water. Due its popularity, we recommend getting to the park when the gates open at 6am to grab a parking space. If no parking is available, visitors can park down below at KCC, but then will have to walk almost an additional mile to reach the trailhead. The last entrance to the hike is at 4:30pm with the gates closing shortly after at 6pm.

Getting There

By car: Follow Diamond Head Road to the intersection of 18th Avenue. The entrance to the park is directly across from KCC. Follow the park road through the tunnel to the parking lot. (Additional parking can be found at KCC back down below.)

By bus: Routes 22 (except Tuesdays) and 23 run regularly from Waikiki to Diamond Head. Get off at the Diamond Head / 18th Avenue stop and then walk up the paved road to Diamond Head State Monument.

I went here mid January 2018, very beautiful and you get to see the whole part of Honolulu. It is true that the sun will blast at you the whole time,so bring water. Even though it was around 78-80 degrees it was really hot and saw many other tourists having a hard time climbing. But I did not complain because i knew that NYC was in the teens in terms of temperature. So make sure you bring good shoes and water.
